That is why I think technical excellent people should be in charge. They are the ones able to see the trade offs. They can see who is actually doing great work. Think Linus, Guido, Larry Wall, or Carmack.
It's kind of ironic, so much drama all for a safe centrist corporate democrat. Although perhaps that's why it's such a big deal for liberals, it's oligarchical infighting. It's even more confusing that he's funded by the same billionaires that trump is.
I cheer on and have volunteered for progressive candidates before on the east coast. NYC keeps putting out rockstars. I guess its something about this diverse pressure cooker of a city? I don't know but they keep doing it.
You are talking about Texas, an also ran mess that has a lot of work to do. Lets put aside the fact that they love their unique flavors of voter suppression. At best, for now all we can hope is whichever nobody gets elected does not cause trouble for the party like Fetterman.
And lets be real, they will be gone once the heat dies down post Trump and the state flips back to Republican.
All states seem to be going towards an enlightenment towards the left but at wildy different rates. Progressives focusing on the coasts + the rust belt make sense as those states have a history of economic populism (and are swing states) whereas Texas might come around a long time from now once the oil companies decline enough and the modern company towns made by people like Musk fall apart like they always historically have. You need a trigger of extreme economic pain for the people to finally bite the bullet and try something new. Texas is not there yet. They have better cost of living and enough industry but they are definitely on the road to disaster in many areas.
It reminds me. When I had my consulting company 20 years ago, I defined these "metrics" to decide if a project was successful.
- Is the client happy?
- Are the team members growing(as in learning)?
- Were we able to make a profit?
Everything else was less relevant. For example: Why do I care that the project took bit longer, if at the end the client was happy with the result, and we can continue the relationship with new projects. It frees you from the cruelty of dates that are often set arbitrary.
So perhaps we should evaluate AI coding tools the same. If we can deliver successful projects in a sustainable way, then we are good.
I think the solution is in adjusting our ways of life. Simpler living, smaller houses and more density, being able to walk and bike, shared common areas, increase health span, being able to live independently for longer, simpler hobbies, not needing so much stuff, etc.
I am with you, it is a scary time. I have to remind myself that we have gone through worst times. My grandfather grew up in a ranch, at 22, along with his extended family and friends, they took arms and joined a revolution, they overthrew a dictator. They fought on the back of a horse for years. It was a rough life, but they endured, and here I am. Enjoying a life so comfortable that would be unimaginable for them. You cannot stop moving in life because things can go wrong.
I do agree with this idea in the sense that companies keep trying to add people to projects to do more things or complete projects sooner which ends up wasting a lot of effort. A more cost conscious way is to have smaller teams and let them more time to explore better approaches for longer.
