I’m 47 and have been working for over 20 years also and programming for many many more. I see AI used a lot in industry amongst my peers and friends. Personally though I don’t use it. I like the thinking and planning phase and I like the typing phase.

I’m a programmer for life. My hobbies revolve around programming and hardware as well (demos for retro hardware: XTs up to Pentium, Sega Master System, custom built hardware). I stay up late working on this stuff and I still have the drive to do it with two young kids who take up a lot of my time.

I have zero interest in an AI doing any of it for me. I don’t think I’ll be replaced by an AI but I might be forced to use one by an employer at which point I think I’ll retire and just work on my hobby projects!

I do this with my son when we go for a walk through our nearby reserve! I'm trying to teach him about nature and keeping our environment clean and how we live alongside nature and we should take care of it. He's pretty invested now which is great - when we forget to bring a bag he always mentions it, or if we're walking somewhere else like on the way to kinder he'll point out some rubbish and say we should have brought a bag with us.

I’m always pleasantly surprised when I’m reminded that he and his brother made SRE and BRE. I love hearing that folks from those days are still making great things.

There were some comments somewhere below about that virality being bought though. I don't know how true that is or where those commenters got their information. If you look at google trends though there is practically no mention of ClawdBot before around January 23, even though the project was released in November.

It was renamed many times. It was also called "clawdis" at one point, and prior to that "warelay," when it was simply a Whatsapp gateway for Claude Code. It was already gaining some momentum at that point but wouldn't reflect as search results for "Clawdbot," and especially wouldn't be visible on Google Trends when most of the conversation was on X/Github.

Even if the conversation was on other sites, people would still search for it.

he likely poured oil into the flame investing a few hundred bucks to double the virality

and according to HN, somehow that's a bad thing? Like making your own project more popular and successful using your own resources is...bad?

He's not really trading anything though. He was hired by OpenAI. OpenClaw will remain free and open source (it's the first line of his blog post). He says that OpenAI will allow him to work on it and already sponsors it so maybe that means he'll have time to improve it, I guess.

Given he's moving to SF to work in their office I presume part of it is he'll be working in-house on their commercial replacement, and will continue to cover costs on the OSS version which he's free to work on. His recent posts make it clear they've got plans for their own stuff to replace it.

Right, he indicated he's losing $10-20k a month on OpenClaw. Might as well let OpenAI absorb those losses and join the rocket ship.

The guy is a multi millionaire from selling his old software so I'm doubtful it is about the money for him at this point as much as it is the experience working with this tech on another level.

Yes, just like Jony Ive has been doing

Wow! Now this is cool!

I don’t think that’s necessarily true though. We had that recently (it might have been late last year) where an AI was used to add dwarf support to a project (sorry I forget all the details about the project) and the PR was rejected.

Hmm... I guess I'm wrong then :).

Same! I mentioned this in another comment but I really loved GTA1+2 and played them a lot, and was disappointed that 3 lost a lot of the charm and humour that I felt was there in 1+2. It was so serious and dark and I didn't connect with it at all.

I played a lot of GTA1 and a bit of 2 when it came out. I think we used to play it at LAN parties my friends and I had as well. For me that’s where it stopped and I never clicked with GTA3 and onwards!

I absolutely adored the first 2 games, especially GTA2. "Damnation! No donation, nooo salvation!"

GTA2 also had a cool cinematic intro:

I remember downloading the RealPlayer version

Do you play other 3d games? I've seen a lot of difficulty for people not growing up with 3d games just managing the camera + movement. Kind of how I feel looking at high level Fortnite play where the rapid fire build play layered on top of usual fps gunplay is just one layer too much complexity for my experiences growing up with fps only video games.

I’ve played tons of 3D games, ever since they started coming out.

I could never get very far in GTA 3 or Vice City because of the controls. I tried when they came out and I think I tried again later.

It wasn’t looking around, that was never a problem. The shooting controls were abysmal. If I ended up in a fight with more than one person I was pretty much guaranteed to die.

GTA 4 was the first of the main line series where the controls were good enough for me to enjoy the whole game.

I play lots of 3d games and always have (back then I was playing DOOM, Descent, Quake). I really liked the charm of GTA1+2 with the top down view and the (slightly dated) visuals, and the humour and ridiculous over the top vibe of everything ("Gouranga!"). GTA3 was just way too serious for my liking.

This is great advice! Thanks!

Did you consider connecting the usb3300 to the PIO?

Sorry just to clarify - it isn't my project. I just thought it was a great post with some really helpful tips!
