I'd say Craigslist has even less authentication for sellers and it's pretty solid most of the time. I've sold a ton of things on there and honestly never run into scammers at all.
Also, I quit Facebook before they added marketplace so I can't make a comparison. I'm just going off of this thread mostly. I also know people who sell things on marketplace fairly regularly / successfully.
Weird, I've had lots of success with Marketplace as both a buyer and seller. I only do local transactions, which is the same I would have done in the past with Craigslist, but I think Marketplace is miles-better than Craigslist.
Exact same thing here. Had to sell some stuff, hadn't done it in years, and was told Marketplace is the thing these days. Within 5 mins I have half a dozen messages all following the same format and all saying they would send x relative to collect. Took all my ads down and went back to Gumtree which has been flawless so far.
That aside it's funny because I have the exact opposite experience. It's the best place to buy and sell locally. Not every place has Craigslist (for better or worse) so it's good to have at least an OK digital alternative. I use it pretty much every day.
Yeah here in Baltimore Marketplace is definitely the place to buy and sell used stuff. It's like a mildly less annoying Craigslist. Except for the peppering of ads to buy shit online. No, Facebook. I came to you because you're Craigslist now, if I wanted Amazon I would have gone to fucking Amazon, you lost this fight, surrender, please for the love of God. Just show me shit I can drive and exchange cash for today!
My pancake trick is to make very thin pancakes—not quite crepe thin but pretty close—and then have a stack of them. Layered like an actual cake. That's how my grandmother used to make them. They're so much more tasteful when they're not thick and floury.
Longreads seemed to have an editorial shift a few years ago. Among other things, it no longer commissions much (if any) original stories. And the linked stories mostly fall into the personal essay camp which I'm personally less interested in. I generally liked the longform.org mix better. Sad to see them shut down.
A couple of months ago I stumbled across Google One; I thought it was a replacement for Google Drive. I got a popup chat and talked with a Google Rep, asking for clarity. The fact that it wasn't easily understandable from the site wasn't a good sign. Once I learned it was just the latest new way to upgrade Google storage, something I did not need, I ended the chat and went about my business. A few days later I received an email from the Google Play store confirming my purchase of additonal storage through Google One, something I had not requested or purchased, although somehow just being on the One site triggered that purchase. I was really taken aback because I didn't even realize Google had my purchase information. I've never purchased anything from/through Google. I had to go back to the One site, open a chat and then spend the better part of an hour trying to get the charge reversed, which is something they don't usually do.
So basically what I'm trying to say is this: Do not click through to the Google One site.
edit: I should also add that I originally had 17 GB of Google Drive storage (15 GB all users get plus an extra 2 GB for doing some Google survey or something some years ago) but after the Google One storage grift was reversed, my storage went back down to 15 GB. I guess there was a 2 GB penalty.
