Private file access between computers. Even in 2020 it appears that building a connection between machines (macOS, Linux and Windows) requires a miracle if you don't like to share everything with cloud providers.

cryo file mangager is an attempt to get rid of the hassle: https://cryonet.io

There's also syncthing: https://syncthing.net/.

I've recently setup Syncthing and it worked great. I'd appreciate if it allowed me to cut out all relays and just connect directly to my servers, but maybe I just haven't found out how to do that yet.

You can run your own relay servers.

Check out https://magic-wormhole.readthedocs.io/en/latest/ which is basically just a tool to help people do password authenticated key exchange when establishing ephemeral connections.

I recently used magic-wormhole [1] for this. It was a 1-line command that gave me a keyphrase that I told to someone else. They typed the same command on their end, put in the keyphrase, and received my file.

No IPs, no forwarding ports or files. It was a magical experience and Just Worked.

Technically bittorrent + any file encryption format works fine, although it's not something a nontechnical user would ever figure out without either step-by-step instructions or said miracle.

Don't forget to check https://upspin.io/ out :)

Indeed I'd like to add https://onionshare.org which also provides a non cloud solution to share files privatly.

In addition to the other suggestions, you can run Nextcloud on any machine you control and sync to computers, mobile devices, etc.

This is a well-solved problem.

It is, but only for technical skilled people. It's not that simple to setup and understand for regular 'Dropbox' users.
