I find the black top bar to be too stark a contrast against the mostly white results page. It makes it seem as though something extremely important is up there. How is this supposed to be an improvement? I feel like they changed it just for the sake of change without any actual focus on usability.

That's what they were going for. Too many people were tuning the top bar out for their liking probably. Now it's unmissable.
