There seems to be an ongoing effort/mistake that is conflating state and federal politics in Australia.
All these draconian laws and crackdown on protestors is happening in one state, Victoria, and is the work of the state government. This article is about that particular state, and that particular government only.
This is an extreme left wing state government doing all this. Meanwhile the federal government, which has not been on board with any of these measures, is right wing. I suspect this may be a large part of the reason the difference isn't clarified within media organizations that tend to have an obvious bias.
Oh I wasn't trying to make this a left/right issue. The right wing NSW government is horrible and just as corrupt as the left wing VIC government. They haven't been as bad on this particular issue though.
Specific laws aside, I was just trying to point out that all the horrible things that have been appearing in the international news about Australia all happened in Victoria, and it wasn't an Australia wide thing.
