Google research is throwing plenty of R&D into the use of ML in chemistry, biology, and medicine. Those projects are long term and HN does not pay enough attention.

But even Google management was scared that OpenAI will corner the market in a bullshit generation for consumers. They did bring some big guns from doing real work to fight back.
