Why is 1 GB equal to 10^9 bytes instead of 2^30?
Besides it making more difference for bigger disks, there is a huge performance penalty on x86 for disks that use sectors that are not a multiple of 1kiB. And since earlier models were MB sized, they couldn't even get those few percent back.

Hug? They'd be able to use all the space except that last fraction of 1 KiB, a very small percentage if any.

The last fraction of 1KiB on each head, on each cylinder. In a 1TB disk, that's nothing, in a 100MB disk, that adds fast.
